MANAGED SERVICES SOLUTION
FRAME RELAY MONITORING
Trouble:
After review of ABC companies' historical trend reports
on frame relay circuit monitoring there was high utilization,
continuously exceeding utilization thresholds, on one of
ABC's frame relay circuits from NJ to CA over a sustained
period. ABC's MIS manager was aware of slow performance
affecting the Citrix Server located in NJ over this link
and was planning a bandwidth upgrade in the next 2 months.
ABC's dedicated Panurgy Technical Account Manager (TAM)
recommended ABC company have Panurgy provide an additional
service that would report bandwidth utilization by application.
Troubleshooting:
Panurgy installed a bandwidth-shaping device that reports
utilization, and ultimately shapes the applications that
are running over the frame relay circuit. After a period
of a week the reports showed particular non-essential applications
utilizing significant bandwidth. ABC's TAM "tuned" the bandwidth
shaping device to allow priority to be given to the Citrix
Server traffic and reducing non-essential applications to
a small portion of available bandwidth. After implementing
the new bandwidth utilization rules there was a significant
improvement in the Citrix Server response to the users in
CA.
Diagnosis:
As the frame relay circuit monitoring reported, and the
bandwidth-shaping device pin-pointed non-essential applications
were using far more bandwidth then what was previously assumed
by ABC company. Citrix Server response over the frame relay
from NJ to CA was severely impacted by the "equal access"
to the available bandwidth over the frame relay circuit.
Analysis:
What was going to be a bandwidth upgrade to the frame relay
circuit, at a great monthly reoccurring expense to ABC Company,
was solved by a significantly reduced one-time cost of a
bandwidth-shaping device. By combining frame relay circuit
monitoring, with bandwidth-shaping, ABC Company effectively
took control, down to the last byte, of the bandwidth currently
available and being paid for.
