PANURGY'S MANAGED SERVICES SOLUTION
PERFORMANCE MONITORING

Trouble: Panurgy's Network Operations Center was alerted to an exceeded threshold on the main file & print servers network interface card (NIC) utilization at XYZ company. Specifically, the utilization continually exceeded 90+% of the available bandwidth of the 100mbps connection causing an overload and delay of the servers' response to end users within the organization.

Troubleshooting: After review of XYZ company's trend reports, bandwidth was noted to be in the 70% to 85% range on the file and print server NIC. Bandwidth usage showed a small increase on the month over month reports peaking at 85% the month prior. The client's dedicated Panurgy Technical Account Manager (TAM) contacted the MIS manager of XYZ to review the sudden spike and leveling of utilization at 90+ %. The MIS manager advised that recently they had added an additional segment to the network, bringing on additional users. The additional users are what ultimately brought the utilization to the 90+ % level. Panurgy reviewed the hardware inventory of the file and print server and recommended the client either upgrade to gigabit or install an additional 100mbps NIC in a redundant load balanced team.

Diagnosis: By adding additional users XYZ company overloaded their 100mbps on their file and print server. Had XYZ company contacted their TAM they would have been advised that the addition of users would have caused the overloading and also been advised of the best method to increase bandwidth.

Analysis: What may have been transparent to most users would have caused delayed server response and ultimately slowed employee performance. This performance bottleneck would have continued for an untold period of time and expense to XYZ company.
