Chris Breiner
Account Representative

This month's issue of Panurgy Technology News, spotlights Chris Breiner. Chris has been a Senior Account Representative with Panurgy for over 5 years. Over the years, he has developed great relationships with many of his clients. Chris's clients have come to rely on him to work with Panurgy's technical staff to create the IT solution that will best meet their needs, while respecting their budgets.

Chris grew up in Livingston, New Jersey and attended Livingston High School. When you ask him what he wanted to be when he grew up he cheerfully replies: "A sales guy…didn't everyone."

Chris is a natural salesman and when asked about what he loves most about his job, he responded, "The most rewarding sales experiences are when you meet with a customer about a specific service and there may not be an immediate fit. Then they contact you weeks or months later regarding another service that was discussed but was not a pressing need at the time. Such was the case with Fuji Hunt. We had 3 meetings with them about providing monitoring and intrusion detection on there firewalls but they decided to go another direction. Six months later they called me and asked me if we still provide Help Desk services. We now provide Help Desk for them as well as On-Site Support, and WAN Monitoring. They have also provided us with a referral into there sister company Fuji Medical and we are now providing them On-Site Support for their remote offices. Educating our customers on the full range of our service offerings, not just the topic at hand, has proven to pay dividends for the customers long term needs."

Chris and his wife Tracy of 8 years, live in Sparta. Chris enjoys weightlifting, hiking and playing Texas-Hold'em with friends.

It's Me, and Here's My Proof
Why Identity and Authentication Must Remain Distinct

No matter what kinds of technological or procedural advancements occur, certain principles of computer science will remain--especially those concerning information security. Among all the competing claims of security vendors that their latest shiny box will solve all your security woes, a basic understanding of computer science fundamentals is missing.

But good computer science never loses importance, and knowing the science can help you choose products and develop processes. For example, there are very important distinctions among identity, authentication, and authorization. Knowing them can help protect you against the increasingly common tendency to combine the first two.

Let's start by defining the concepts:
Identity.

A security principal (you or a computer, typically) wants to access a system. Because the system doesn't know you yet, you need to make a declaration of who you are. Your answer to the question "Who are you" is the first thing you present to a system when you want to use it. Some common examples of identity are user IDs, digital certificates (which include public keys), and ATM cards. A notable characteristic of identity is that it is public, and it has to be this way: identity is your claim about yourself, and you make that claim using something that's publicly available.

Finding the Right Spam and Virus Protection

Protecting your email communications from spam, viruses and other threats seems like a never ending task. Email threats can effect productivity and bandwidth, eat up disk space and put your entire network at risk.

With limited IT resources, most organizations can not afford to have staff dedicated to fighting off daily e-mail threats. You need an effective email security solution that is affordable and easily administered.

When searching for the perfect solution be sure to look for the following features:
Easy administration
Automatic updates with the latest threats
Provides group filtering policies
Allows customization of corporate policies
And reports on message traffic flow and trends

A unique feature for some Spam solutions is a multilayered strategy which are more successful then the traditional solutions of on-premise appliances and software solutions. The multilayered solutions keep more than 99% of destructive messages blocked from your network environment.

Panurgy's MailProtect Solution enables easy configuration and control of how spam, viruses, worms and inappropriate content are filtered with 99% accuracy. Using a multilayered technology, email is filtered, suspect messages are stored in a safe, external quarantine wherean off-site report can be accessed by IT departments, employees or both. The IT department has the ability to review all quarantined e-mails and make any adjustments to their corporate policies within this administrative tool. Customers can choose to allow employees to manage their own quarantines, in which case a "Spam Quarantine Report" is sent to the employees' email in-box. The end user can then determine how items filtered should be handled.
