Eli Siegel
Help Desk
Supervisor
Eli has been with Panurgy
for over 3 years. He commutes to Denville from his home in East
Stroudsburg, Pa. where he resides with his wife, Ellen of eight
years and their 5 cats.
A typical day for Eli at
Panurgy: He arrives in the NOC at 9:00am and immediately logs into
his PC, sorts through his e-mail from the previous night. Addresses
and prioritizes and dispatches any clients open issues from the
previous night. After urgent issues are addressed, Eli logs onto the
Help Desk phone system, along with our Help Desk analysts/engineers.
He juggles and distributes incoming phone calls, client issues and
technical support among our Help Desk staff and Field Engineers,
non-stop through out the day.
For Eli the benefit of
working on the Help Desk is learning something new everyday, the
fact that everyday is different regarding the clients he is helping
and the technical issues he is solving. The diversity of the day is
what makes his job so interesting and rarely boring.
Eli grew up on Long
Island, NY. He graduated from the State University of NY at Stony
Brook. When not working Eli enjoys leisurely rides on his motorcycle
and working on the Board of Directors at his
clubhouse. |
SSL-VPN: THE SOLUTION TO SECURE REMOTE ACCESS
HEADACHES
The need
today for anytime, anywhere remote access by mobile workers to
secure corporate network resources is greater than ever and
growing all the time. Traveling employees, telecommuters,
contractors, partners and customers need easy, dependable
secure remote connectivity. VPN solutions have been around for
awhile, but IPSec VPN technology – the most common VPN
solution for some time now – typically requires the
pre-installation and configuration of a VPN client
application, and the communications protocols used by IPSec
VPN solutions are often blocked by firewalls at business,
hotels, airports and elsewhere, frustrating the mobile worker
who needs access from anywhere.
What is SSL-VPN?
SSL-VPN
solutions can be configured to provide users with easy-to-use,
secure and clientless remote access to a broad range of
resources on the corporate network.
Using
only a standard Web browser, users have access
to:
-
Files and
file systems (including FTP and Windows Network File
Sharing)
-
Web-based
applications
-
Microsoft® Outlook and other email applications
-
HTTP and
HTTPS intranets
-
Applications installed on desktop machines or
hosted on an application server
-
Full
remote control of desktop or server machines
-
Terminal
Services, VNC, RDP, Telnet and SSH
Why does SSL-VPN provide a better solution than
IPSec VPN?
Since SSL-VPN solutions only require a web
browser communicating via SSL (also known as https) – the same
protocol used by secure websites such as ecommerce sites –
they are not blocked by firewalls as most firewalls will allow
ssl/https communication, and they are easier and quicker to
deploy, since they only require a web browser, not a specific
VPN client application to be installed and
configured.
What
does it cost?
Solutions supporting about a dozen or so
remote users start for under $1,000, and scale up to hundreds
of remote users.
How do I get started?
While SSL-VPN solutions
are easy and reliable for remote workers to use, just like any
network security solution, the solution should be designed and
installed by qualified network security integrators. Contact
Panurgy and we will find the right solution for your
business. |

Are you IT
Strategic?
The purchase and search for IT products and services
to make the business operate more efficiently can be a
daunting task. While Panurgy is pleased to be able to
help our clients with this “search”, there are questions that
need to be asked when looking at a replacement or even a new
technology. The main question: What is the strategy of the
business from an IT perspective? I have selected a few
products that have recently been upgraded or purchased new by
some of our clients. In each of these cases I have given a few
strategic questions that should be asked before the solution
is selected.
Firewall/Security Appliance: This device is
used to protect your network resources from outside threats.
Its primary purpose is perimeter security but can also be used
to provide deeper levels of security depending on the business
acceptable use policy for Internet browsing.
