8 Tips for Launching a Company
Intranet
By
Jeff Wuorio
Reprinted with
permission from Microsoft Small Business Center
Many small-business owners
get it when it comes to the influence and reach of the Internet. But
what they may not fully appreciate is how that medium can be used
exclusively within their own business.
Planning and
programming an intranet — an internal Web site restricted to those
within your company — can prove a boon to communication, project
management and a host of other responsibilities. But using it
effectively means more than building it, plugging it in, and letting
it rock.
With software such as
Windows SharePoint Services, a private Web site could also easily be
converted into an "extranet," which is a restricted site that serves
an internal audience but also allows in selected outside partners
and others. Extranets are particularly useful when outside vendors
are key members of project teams.
Here are eight dos and
don'ts for launching an intranet (or extranet).

| Vista: To Migrate or Not?
After
much ado, Microsoft's newest operating system release in almost five
years, Vista became available to business users in November 2006.
Vista offers no shortage of visually stunning effects and new
features, but these benefits come at a price — namely the need for
more powerful and faster PCs. If you are among the many that are
considering adopting this new operating system for your small or
mid-sized business, there are some important factors you need to
consider before you make your decision.
Vista's key benefits
Microsoft developers have built Vista to succeed where previous
versions have fallen short. Here are just some of the improvements
and features that are part of Vista:

Communications
is About to Get Simple, Again. (One Click
Does it All)
The PC proves
again and again, it is the small company’s best friend. It’s reduced your
costs, extended, your capabilities and is now about to level the playing field
of communications.
Unified
Communications (UC) from Microsoft and others is real-time communications that’s
integrated into virtually everything on your hard drive
and cell phone. The payoff to companies large and small
is significant increases in productivity and, once
again, an opportunity to improve the bottom line.
Example #1:
Unified Communications helps you leverage the extraordinary value and increasing
popularity of Instant Communications (IM). IM gives you the wonderful ability
to determine whether someone is “present” or available to “talk”. UC also
brings your email directly to your cell phone. But, that’s just the beginning.

Employee Spotlight

Mike Marvin
Lead Engineer
Though
Mike's original plans were to be an aspiring Rock Star (like so many
of us dreamed of), he soon realized his true talent and interest
lied in the technology field. Now with Panurgy for over three and a
half years, Mike spends his days addressing critical customer
networking issues and alarms. He is one of Panurgy's main go-to guys
for the escalated server and network customer problems. Mike spends
many weekends and nights on 24 hour call to handle the clients
critical issues that come up during off hours and foreign locations.
When not handling escalated issues, Mike provides the final details
to project and installations plans for many of our existing clients,
as well as new customer roll outs.
Mike is
working hard to get certified in the role of Systems Engineer as
Panurgy works toward our Cisco Advanced Unified Communications
designation.
Mike
spends his off hours in East Stroudsburg, Pa., with his wife Sandra,
their son Mack and three year old daughter Shannon. He does still
enjoy playing his guitar and listening to music.
Protecting Your Exchange Server
Today, email has become a mission critical application for business.
According to IDC, No online application is more widely used than
email. Even the smallest companies have embraced this technology as
a critical communication tool. Businesses count on having 24x7
email access to communicate with employees, customers and partners,
so they need to ensure email servers have effective security
solutions in place. And the more your business depends on Microsoft
Exchange as your email server, the more important it is to have a
complete Exchange Server protection strategy in place.
